The New York shows are over, and the muted mood of fall 2006 has begun to emerge: dark, stormy colors, big sweaters, and a scattering of blasts from the eighties past. From leggings and booties to a little velvet dress, here’s what you need to know about the shape of things to come.

Your Leggings Are No Longer for the Gym. It’s a lean season for the bottom half. Zac Posen and Ralph Lauren were among the many who championed the stovepipe trouser. For the brave of backside, Thakoon’s plain black legging with a shrunken pea is as modern as it gets. For the rest of us, they’re handy when it comes to layering. (And it frequently does this season, too.)

You’ll Cuddle Up in Roomy Knits. Every so often, designers really do keep comfort in mind. When the blizzard of ’07 arrives, you’ll have plenty of sweaterdresses to choose from: Derek Lam’s is roomy in black and white, while Karl Lagerfeld’s is slinkier, with peekaboo cutouts all along its sides. And Zero Maria Cornejo belted a white sweater-coat for a sleeker silhouette.

You’ll Blow Off Your Blow-out. Because hats are big, big news. Floppy chapeaus were paired with evening dresses (Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs), tidy berets added a clichéd yet effective Parisian charm to just about everything at Thakoon, and Vera Wang’s velvet toppers evoked the androgynous chic of Romeo Gigli.

You’ll Go Mad for Plaid. Really! The glamorous cut of Marc Jacobs’s wrap coat kept it from looking like a uniform, and Ralph Lauren made tartan sexy for evening. Behnaz Sarafpour managed a nostalgic look with a grown-up flair. Oscar de la Renta’s shift dress is decidedly unfussy: exactly what his well-heeled clients like for lunch at La Goulue.

You’ll Wear Color Rarely, But Boldly. Derek Lam said his collection is “about New York at night, racing through Times Square and catching flashes of color.” The same could be said for the season as a whole, which was on the dour side but dotted with rich splashes of brilliance: crimson at Carolina and Calvin, plum at Donna Karan, royal blue from Vera Wang.

Based on the kickoff week in New York, Fall 2006 looks to be a voluminous, fabric-filled season of dark - almost depressing - shades of grey, black & white. Only accents of eggplant/bordeux, muted/heathered teal, and the odd lemon yellow, fuschia, purple and lipstick red will keep things from really heading over to the dark side. Accessories-wise, put the bling away, and opt for makeup that looks like you're wearing none...other than the odd fuschia or red lip if you're an especially determined & intrepid fashionista. Fortunately, this is a great season for dramatic leather gloves, especially skin-tight & elbow-length.
Trends: Protective. Beefy knits, capes & layers galore at Marc Jacobs and Max Azria. For a more elegant take, Doo.ri showed oversized, yet elegant, silhouettes crafted from bias-cut menswear suiting. (Marc Jacobs)

Costume. Want to be mistaken for an extra in a period piece? This is your season. From Alice Roi's naughty French fille, to Tuleh's 40s film noir vamp, to Heatherette's New York street performer/club denizen, there were also dishelleved milkmaids at Afshin Feiz, mid-century stewardesses at Baby Phat, and even a full-on Dynasty/80s promdress moment at Venexiana. Contemporary Socialite. For the uptown Global Chic crowd, the usual suspects - J. Mendel, Carolina Herrera, Peter Som, Derek Lam, and an incredibly fresh Bill Blass - delivered with the expected: chic little day dresses & matching coats, slim suits, cocktail gear, and of course, red carpet & black tie attire. For the downtown social set, up-and-comer's like Thakoon, Temperley London, Luella Bartley and L.A.M.B.-designer Zaldy offered up multi-tasking, wearable frocks, zippered jumpsuits, oversized knits, and ruffled, drapey gorgeousness. Now that all the fashion shows are finished, next fall’s trends are official. Color is out, capes are in—yes, for real—and hemlines are on the rise. Also on the horizon: emphatic shapes (like the masculine suits at Comme des Garçons), bold combinations (black with white, strong fur trims), and a view of fashion that leaves little room for sweet.

2.You’ll Need a Flashlight for Your Closet. Colorful it was not. Head-to-toe black, often tempered with white, was widespread.
