Hi,
dirty wool felts faster.... I'm not sure why, I think it's a bit technical, to do with "crimp" and the scales on the wool. etc...
All I know is, the same wool from the same sheep, if you wash one part 100% clean it will be more difficult to use than the wool you leave natural....
Remember I use a lot water and soap when I make felt so in the end the felt is clean...
The wool we like to use is carded without washing... We have also used uncarded, unwashed wool... It is very interesting and makes nice felt...
First you beat the wool with sticks to get rid of the big bits of rubbish and then "fluff" it up so you can spread it around and then felt it normally. Maybe we could come to Lituania and show you someday...
(if you needle felt I think dirty wool is maybe a bit smelly
but you can wash it yourself before you use it... and then hand card it also... needle felt uses so little wool hand carding is not a problem.)
If we dye the wool then we wash it by hand first also... very gentle, it just takes away the dust and loose dirt but leaves all the fat...
Remember, wool from some kinds of sheep does not felt. Or sometimes they have a "double coat" (longer hairs on the outside and soft wool underneath) What is the factory you got it from?? Sometimes the wool is only for spinning into yarn.
So where are the places they card wool in Lituania? do you have an address?
Does anyone know the name of the breed of sheep you have in Lithuania??
Must go now and do some work... christmas is coming...
