This Silk visualisation intends to document visually open source evidence about Russian strikes in Syria. The Russian Federation initiated a sustained airborne military intervention in Syria allegedly targeting ISIS (IS or Islamic State) strongholds.
We at the investigative site Bellingcat.com found a series of videos released by the Russian Ministry of Defence. After close examination, the coordinates for locations in Syria bombed by Russian jets shown in these videos do not reflect an air campaign focused on Islamic State targets. Thus, for example, two of the videos claimed to show strikes in Raqqa (the capital of the Islamic State) but actually took place over a 100 miles away. No IS presence has ever been reported in that area. Also, six other strikes took place in other areas, with no known Islamic State footprint either.
This Silk visualisation sequel also focuses on additional open source evidence, gathered in the process of investigations.
